Not sure if this is good or bad news, always liked the St. James Gate location -- all the history. At least it's staying in Ireland.

St. James Gate will be kept and upgraded. According to The Irish Times (http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/frontpage/2008/0911/1221039067552.html) the Leixlip brewery will brew for export as well as beers brewed under licence, and St. James' will brew the stout for the Irish and British market.

Great, more fuel for the "Guinness is different in Ireland" debate. ;)

Sure that Guinness brewed in Kildare isn't half as nice. (Just to get in early)

The only sad part of this all is Diageo plans to cut jobs in half by 2013 and to shut two breweries in Dundalk and Kilkenny.

Yes that is unfortunate. The plans to close Dundalk and Kilkenny were announced some time back, but the location of the new brewery was only announced today.

The Waterford brewery, which only makes 'essence of Guinness' for export, will stay open.

Hah. ;)

MadSci, I've been -- a couple times. The Guinness isn't different, but it is better. :D

Any chance that the original Job losses may be able to roll into the new location?

There was talk of that, but I don't know if it was just marketing talk. They're talking about St. James' production dropping by a third and the new brewery employing 170, so there will be job losses.
