Weihenstephan Vitus Named "World's Best Beer"
by Katie Kelly Bell

A Bavarian wheat beer, Weihenstephan Vitus, gets the nod as the 2011 World’s Best Beer from the World Beer Awards in England. Often referred to as the unofficial Beer World Championships, entry in the World Beer Awards is no small feat. Every beer candidate must first undergo a gauntlet of regional style heats. After several rounds of these blind tastings, which take place across the globe, the best beers in each style category gain entry to the final competition.

The final blind tasting looks for winners in each style category and an overall winner, aka Best Beer.

The Weihenstephan Vitus was rated first in not one, but three style categories, sweeping awards for “World’s Best Wheat Beer,” “World’s Best Strong Wheat Beer” and “Europe’s Best Strong Wheat Beer.” Not too shabby for a single beer. It’s probably all that cold storage in the brewery’s monastery cellars that give this beer its edge.

The intriguing fruity bubblegum and spicy qualities in Weihenstephan Vitus grant it quite a distinct flavor profile, which Professor Josef Schrädler, director of the Bavarian state brewery Weihenstepha, takes special pride in crafting. “Premium beers must have unique flavor and a distinctive character,” he notes. The brewery recommends enjoying any of their wheat beers with light meals, such as veal sausages.

What does the World’s Best Beer taste like?

Judges praised it for its medium body, creamy texture and long finish. Judges also loved the banana, clove and wheat aromas combined with floral and citrus notes on the palate.

For all you lightweights out there, take note, this beer comes it at 7.7% alcohol.

The brewery, which claims to be the world’s oldest, has several other award-winning beers in its portfolio. The Weihenstephan complete portfolio includes: Vitus, Hefe-Weissbier, Hefe-Weissbier Dunkel, Korbinian, Kristall Weissbier, Original Lager, Festbier and Hoplosion.

The Vitus is a damn fine beer. It's a staple in my house.
