The complete list of breweries and brewpubs in Ostbayern. You now may all turn green with envy :D

Of course a list like that can never entirely be accurate as places close, open, move etcetc but I´ll try to keep this as close to updated as possible. If anyone ever really comes here (I know you all dream about it, hehehe), I also have a very good road map prepared. Most of these places are a bit out in the country and don´t show up on the kind of map the AAA gives their members (I know, I have them...) so you´ll need something much more detailed or you´ll waste your time searching for places instead of sitting there drinking beer, hehehe.

If anyone has questions, I´ll be happy to answer them.

PS: Bloody Hell... It just tells me my message is twice as long as the allowed maximum... Even the board can´t handle the wealth of information, hehehe.

As do I, Sturm. That is one HUGE list!

You know, I've been told that my sense of humor, when observed in person, is less sarcastic than it is dry. The definition was described to me by a friend's experience in Scotland while trying to catch a train. He ran into the ticket office (or whatever you call it), and hurriedly asked which trains were coming through the station in the next 30 minutes or so. The clerk rattled off a medium-length list and went back to his paper. My friend thanked him and began to rush off to the platform, and after he got about 5 steps away, the clerk called after him: "Did ye not want to know which one stops?"

TOO funny! :D

I understood the humor and laughed out loud. I can also understand why Stahlsturm may not of caught the humor. I remember a few years ago some friends and I were playing tennis at a local park when an exchange student from Spain came by and ask if he could join us. We naturally said yes and it turned out he was pretty good player. Afterwards I ask if he would be willing to give me his phone number so the next time we play I could give him a ring. A very puzzled look came over his face and he said "why would you give me a ring"? He thought I meant give him a ring for his finger. I explained I meant a call on the phone and since the phone makes a ringing sound..........well anyway you understand.

So I've been watching this thread for a while now, and I'm a little confused.

ALL of those breweries are in your area?

I'm not saying I don't believe you, but to a sheltered yankee, that seems outrageous!

I've never really thought about going to Germany, mostly because I don't speak the language, and I'd end up somewhere I shouldn't. But now, with all those options, I may have to reconsider.

Steveh? Chaz? You up for a trip overseas? Anyone?

1. That's how the world should be. I recall this quote from an old brewer (Armand de Clerk maybe) who said one shouldn't brew for houses that you couldn't see from your own roof. I like that sentiment.

The sad thing is the number of breweries in German is declining, but they've still got everyone else outnumbered. IIRC it's something like 1200 in Bavaria alone.

2. Germany is very easy to get around for Americans. A large number of Germans speak English. Don't be too pig headed about it, maybe try a few German phrases (it's not really that hard, as our language is related/based on theirs). You owe it to yourself to visit one of beers spiritual homelands. Zum wohl!

Outrageous indeed - but that's the culture, a culture that is, well - intoxicating - as much for its good beer as for its love of life!

Steveh? Chaz? You up for a trip overseas?

Always. It's the Euro that isn't cooperating!

And while I agree with Meridian about the language to some point, there are 2 aspects that prompted me to learn some German; 1.) If you get out to some of the smaller villages in Germany and Austria (even Switzerland), you find less English spoken. And 2.) the Germans are a proud people (who aren't?) and may not immediately speak English because they "...only speak a little." Of course, I've discovered that these are usually the ones who know 10 times as much English than the German I've forgotton.

I've traveled there when none in my group knew any German. We got along fine. Although like Meridian says, We used the little we did know such as please, thank you, hello, and things like that. We made the effort. Several of the last times It has not really been an issue as my wife speaks it fluently and my mother in law is German. I always make the effort to try their languauge as much as I can where ever I am. Once in Hungary some people we met on the street in my friends ancestral home were able to communicate enough to take us to the home of a woman who had once lived in the USA and spoke English. It was a small rural Parish and they spent the day even enlisting the priest to help my friend find his relatives. And they succeeded. We went to their house and he saw pictures of his ancestors some of which were duplicates of some that his father had. It was wonderful. The people were extremely hospitable giving us Staropramen, wine and lunch. We saw the graves of his family in the churchyard that were hundreds of years old. Truly a fun time for us.

Hey Bruno,
Anyone who loves Beer should go to Germany. It is one of the remaining Brewing nations I intend to visit.

United States: I live here... Some of the best Beers in the World, according to MJ, if you want a good example of any given style in the world, someone, somewhere in the US has a great example.

Belgium: Done three times, I'll be back
England: Done twice but will go again soon.
Germany: Not yet, still want to go.
Czech republic: Not yet, will go when I go to Germany.

Cheers!

This list makes me very thirsty but I need to run 12 kilometers today before I touch a beer.

I have found since moving to Germany in 2001 that even when I attempt to speak German to people here, they automatically switch to English. Sometimes that can be frustrating though because I want to improve my German language skills but if everyone (including my naughty husband) speaks English around me, I´m not going to learn too fast. Good thing for television, books and In-Laws that don´t speak a lot of English. Hehe.

My wife's Oma lives in Berlin. We spent several days with her in Bavaria several years ago. She speaks no English. She talked to me in German and I understood very little and I'm certain she did not understand my English either. But I enjoyed being with her and the rest of my wife's relatives all of whom do speak English and many of whom have traveled to the USA and have stayed with us while visiting Washington DC.

Understanding a language and speaking it often are two seperate things. For example, I´m pretty decent at understanding and especially reading dutch but I can hardly speak a word.

All these breweries are in eastern Bavaria. The furthest are about 130 km (~ 80 miles) from my house. The brewery density is pretty normal for southern Germany I´d say. We´re a stubborn people and stick to our own, regardless of how good that swill on TV looks like. We know better, hehehe.

As a comparison, Ostbayern is about the area of Massachussetts (20000 square km roughly) but much less populated. There´s only about 2 million people living here and Regensburg is by a wide marging the biggest town. For example, the city of Amberg (with 5 breweries) is a mere 40000 inhabitants. They´re just 40000 very thirsty people, hehehe.

The key to that would be preparation. Once you have a route and a set of names you want to visit it´s easy to find a way around. And the german "Bier" is spelled slightly different from the english "Beer" but it sounds almost identical.

Although, in most pubs a beer (= o.5 Liters) would be like 2.20 EUR so that´s under 3 USD at any rate. Beer is cheap over here.

I think me beloved wifey could tell you a story or two on that one. She didn´t know a word of german when she moved here. She picked up a great deal by now but the fact that my english is somewhat fluent was a hinderance to her progress. She would´ve learned a lot faster if I wouldn´t know english but of course, how would I have been able to lure her over here without knowing her language in the first place :D Talk about a perfect catch 22, hehehe.

I don´t usually count how much I have, more how long I have been drinking. For example, I went to a 3 day music festival that started on a Friday. After I parked my car in the press area at 14:00 I opened my first beer. I drank my last one around 2 in the morning. I have no idea how many it was but I found my car (and had managed to take good photographs) so I guess not too many. I repeated the same procedure for the next two days and all I know is that was A LOT of beer. Good thing I don´t go to festivals that often.

There are plenty of very good African beers. They have a rich Dutch, German and English heritage.

Name a few, wouldja? I'll do a search (Ratebeer won't let me search by continent...).

Awoo-yoo, Lion, Rogue, Windhoek and others. Not sure if all of them are still available. Some were good others similiar to Australian beer. The Awoo - yoo (sp) was very good but strong and snuck up on you. The brewer was at the Brickskeller for 3 separate tastings. Although he was an African he trained in Germany.
