Talented chefs, Rogue Ales and Northwest wines are all part of Oyster Cloyster, one of the major fund-raising events at the Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport. The event this year is Saturday, Nov. 2, from 6:30–9:30 p.m.

Oyster Cloyster is the party that kicks off Newport’s holiday season. Proceeds benefit the Aquarium Science Program at the Oregon Coast Community College and the Oregon Coast Aquarium.

The event brings chefs and foodies together for a celebration of the oyster, an iconic symbol of the fishing and aquaculture industries in the region. A variety of delectable food sourced from land and sea will be served. Craft beer from Rogue Ales and wines from Duck Pond Cellars, Noble Estate Vineyard and Winery, Silver Falls Vineyards and Red Hawk Winery & Vineyard will also be available.

The event’s cooking competition, where chefs vie for awards judged by professionals, as well as the coveted people’s choice award, provides a variety of culinary creations and entertainment every year, according to the aquarium's Erin Paxton.

The roster of competing chefs includes: Matt Bennet, Sybaris Bistro, Albany; Garnett Black, Adobe Resort and Restaurant, Yachats; Charlie Branford, Local Ocean, Newport; Ana De Lanoy, Pelican Pub & Brewery, Pacific City; Jason Gonzales, Asatico Fusion Sushi, Newport; Kent Harrison, Bridges Restaurant, Embarcadero Resort Hotel and Marina, Newport; Brett Hutton, Spirit Mountain Casino, Grand Ronde; Mario Magana, Ocean Bleu @ Gino’s, Newport; Terry Rafferty, Shilo Newport Restaurant & Lounge, Newport, and - Mathias Wolf, Rogue Ales Bayfront Public House, Newport.

Tickets to Oyster Cloyster are available at oystercloyster.org or by calling 541-867-4931. General admission is $75, or $65 for aquarium members. Pearl-level admission, which includes 6 p.m. entry to the event, tickets for two, four drink tickets and an exclusive gift, is available for $350.

The Oyster Cloyster raffle benefits the Lois Rahkonen Memorial AQS Student Internship Scholarship Fund. The fund supports students during their required internship to complete the Aquarium Science Program. Each raffle basket contains items valued at more than $1,500. Raffle entries are available at the OCCC campuses, the TLC Federal Credit Union and at the event ($20 each or six for $100).

The aquarium will close at 4 p.m. on Nov. 2 in preparation for the event and will resume its normal winter hours, opening at 10 a.m. and closing at 5 p.m., the next day. For information visit aquarium.org or call 541-867-4931.
The aquarium is in South Beach at 2820 S.E. Ferry Slip Road, Newport.
