We’ve heard much about the craft beer explosion in America, but we never thought to interpret it literally. The Statesman Journal reports an Oregon brewery has been forced to issue a recall for a two popular lines of its beer because, you guessed it, the bottles are susceptible to spontaneous detonation.

The brew in question comes courtesy of Bend, Ore.’s 10 Barrel Brewing. Apparently the problem is unique to the brewery’s Swill and “Beer No. 1” Cherry Tart beers with no other beers sold by the company subject to the issue.

“It has come to our attention that some of this product may be experiencing secondary fermentation in the bottle, causing over carbonation,” Bec Milgrom of 10 Barrel told the Statesman Journal.

According to the company’s recall statement, all 12 or 22-ounce bottles of Swill and 22-ounce bottles of “Beer No. 1” should be disposed of immediately while, for safety purposes, wearing protective eyewear and gloves. The recall urges consumers to “place all remaining Swill bottles in a closed box and place immediately in a secured Dumpster or trash container outside.”

While there are no health risks for beer drinkers who have already consumed Swill and “Beer No. 1,” this doesn’t bode well for 10 Barrel.

“We take the utmost pride in producing an extremely high quality product and continuously striving for new and innovative beers to send to the consumer. Unfortunately in this instance, despite a rigorous testing and brewing quality-check process, we didn’t hit the mark,” a company statement reads.

Not exactly the “dynamite” approach to craft brewing the company had in mind, no doubt.
