Ben Flerchinger, a mainstay of the Portland brewing scene and beer community, unexpectedly passed away this March, well before his time. Ben had worked at Lucky Lab for over 13 years, and served more recent stints brewing at both Gigantic and 54-40, in addition to being the force behind events such as the Labís Barleywine Festival, and of course the annual BenFest. Ben was also a regular of ours, and over the years, became a friend. We already miss his smile, his optimism, his ability to make any situation seem trivial, and his quirky, unique sense of humor. He was truly a special person who enriched our lives and made the world a better place.
Unfortunately, his passing left his wife Margaret with some medical bills. To help her and honor Ben, we will be pouring Lucky Labrador Brew Pub Benvention Imperial Mild (Benís last brewing brainchild), Ross Island Brewing Benís Porter, and Logsdon Farmhouse Ales, LLC. Wilde Appel Cider, and donating 100% of sales from those three to help with medical bills. Weíll be raising our pints and doing a sunset toast to Ben around 8:45.

    ——
    TURBULENT CONSEQUENCE
Turbulent Consequence is brewed using classic lambic methods from the Senne River Valley in Belgium. A multi-step turbid mash of unmalted wheat and barley undergoes an extended boil, along with aged hops. After the boil, hot wort is pumped into our coolship and cooled overnight, where thriving resident flora from our wild cellar inoculates the wort. It is then filled into oak barrels for spontaneous fermentation and extended maturation. Select barrels from the Turbulent Consequence program are used in various blends throughout the year.

    TURBULENT CONSEQUENCE, PECHE
    Spontaneously Fermented Ale w/ Peaches
Each autumn, the Arzner family heads to Olson Farm and hand-picks winter snow white peaches at the peak of their season. These juicy beauties are then packed into oak barrels with select Turbulent Consequence from the prior year. Matured through the winter and bottled with locally gathered honey to create natural carbonation.
    6% ABV
    $11 / 500mL bottle
    2 bottles / person

    TURBULENT CONSEQUENCE, HONEY FARO
Spontaneously Fermented Ale w/ Local Honey
This unique wild ale was inspired by Belgium’s sweetened lambics, which were traditionally blended with Belgian dark candi sugar and served fresh. Our take on a Faro features local honey as the sweetener, for a regional touch of complexity.
    5.6% ABV
    $11 / 500mL bottle
    2 bottles / person

    FERME DE LA VILLE PROVISION
Farmhouse Ale 50% Aged in Oak Barrels
Our nod to the provisional Belgian farmhouse ales of yesteryear. First, we brew a rustic beer with Belgian malted barley, wheat and rye along with oats, locally gathered honey, noble hops and Belgian farmhouse yeast. This young beer is then blended with portions of barrel-matured farmhouse ales from our wild cellar, and bottle-conditioned to allow for a melding of flavor and body. The result is Ferme de la Ville—a refreshing, tart, golden ale showcasing complex aromas and flavor with a wonderfully dry and vinous finish.
    5.4% ABV
    $9 / 500mL bottle
    4 bottles / person

    HYPNOSIS
    Barleywine Matured in Cognac Barrels
Brewed with specialty English malt, this rustic barleywine was matured for 12 months in freshly-emptied French cognac barrels, imparting an entrancing complexity that features notes of plum, caramel, Red Flame raisins, marzipan, orange marmalade, and a whisper of barrel character.
    10.75% ABV
    $11 / 500mL bottle
    4 bottles / person

    POWDER TO THE PEOPLE
Progressive IPA Brewed w/ Hop Extractions
Powder to the People blends a bright Pilsner malt base and clean yeast profile with three types of Lupulin Powder, inspiring a hoppy solidarity of citrus, pine, melon, and berry notes. It finishes crisp, with a refreshing bitter snap.
    6.2% ABV
    $4.00 / 16oz can, plus deposit
    8 cans / person

That’s right folks, The Bier Stein Invitational Beer Fest is back! We had a great time throwing our first outdoor fest last August despite soaring temperatures. This year we’ll beat the heat and host over 30 breweries pouring from a selection of new, seasonal, and one-off beers. We will provide a food truck, bicycle valet, and a convenient water station (bring your own water bottle!). Admission is $20 and includes a .25L glass (for proper enjoyment of 4oz pours) and 5 beer tickets. Pours will range from 1-4 tickets per 4oz. pour. This is a CASH ONLY, 21+ event. Designated driver admission is $5.
We are seeking volunteers with OLCC Server’s Permits to pour beer from 3-6pm and 6-8pm. If you don’t have an OLCC card, we also need folks to help with admission and supporting the beer servers. Please e-mail aaron@thebierstein.com if you would like to be part of our team. There are perks!
This year’s lineup consists of 100% Oregon beer, cider, and mead. We’ll be featuring a couple new Oregon breweries as well– the list is below! Circadian Soda will also be pouring samples. Breweries marked with an * are new to the fest.

We’ve knocked out six single-hop batches of our Hop in the ‘Pool helles lager, each one featuring a different experimental hop varietal. Brewers, hop growers, and researchers from OSU’s hop cultivation lab will be on site to find out how these fledgling hops manifest in a finished beer. With your help, we’ll weigh in on which varietals show the most promise.
