BDD Brewing Company Marks Grand Opening with ‘Squatchstock’, Eight Beers on Tap, 6/23

Rocky Mount Mills’ Brewery Incubator Tenant Has Grown from Home Brewer to Pro in a Few Short Months

Rocky Mount, NC (June 13, 2018) -- BDD Brewing Company will launch their signature line of beers and space within the Rocky Mount Mills Brewery Incubator on June 23 with an all-day festival they’ve dubbed “Squatchstock” in honor of their company mascot, Sasquatch.

The event will go from 12 - 11 p.m. at the beer garden at Rocky Mount Mills and will feature two bands as well as a solo artist and a BBQ food truck. In addition to those elements, BDD will also be sampling the beers they’ve been hard at work on for the past three months including “I’m Squatchin You” Pale Ale, “Wild Man Uncle” IPA, “Red Eyes” Amber ale brewed with Cinnamon and Chamomile, “Monkey Man” Saison brewed with Ginger and Tangerine, “Abominable Joe Man” French vanilla mocha stout, “Squatch on the Beach” Lemonade Shandy, “el Quinametzin” Mexican Lager and “Squatch and the Giant Peach” a peach cobbler wheat dessert beer.

Started by Chazz Oesch and Matt Nichols, BDD has quickly become a model for how the Rocky Mount Mills Brewery Incubator should work.

“BDD has shown tremendous growth as a member of our incubator,” says Sebastian Wolfrum, executive brewmaster, Rocky Mount Mills. “The team went from brewing on a 5 gal pilot direct fire system to becoming craft brewers of our 10bbl two vessel steam fired system in a very short period. Chazz and Matt are destined for big things in the brewing world and we’re so honored that they decided to start their journey as part of our incubator.”

The Rocky Mount Mills Brewery Incubator, a three-year program, is designed to teach entrepreneurs to brew, learn and proof their concepts while at the same time, helping them to develop a business plan, recruit investment and eventually grow beyond the incubator space.

When I first started at the incubator, I only knew how to brew on our little baby, 5 gallon system. Because of the incubator model, not only was I helped by Bull Durham’s former brewer Ben Hostetter, but all of the other tenants as well. It is a great setup in which we believe that “a rising tide lifts all ships”. We couldn’t be more excited to be a part of what will not only be a great thing for Rocky Mount, but eastern NC as a whole.

About the Rocky Mount Mills Brewery Incubator
Based in a refurbished 6,000 square foot shipping warehouse on the nearly two-hundred-year-old campus, the Brewery Incubator offers participants their own 10 bbl brew system with fermentors in each space to produce up to 1000 bbl per year and a keg cooler to serve beer out of each space with eight taps. All incubator tenants have access to a keg washer, a 5-head canning line, dry and cold storage and a public beer garden to sell and serve their product.
All Incubator tenants have access to the Nash Community College Brewing, Distillation and Fermentation program, the classes are held on Nash’s primary campus as well as in their brewery lab at the Mills.
The inaugural class includes groups with varying backgrounds and approaches to brewing. The brewers include Planetary Elixirs, HopFly Brewing Company, BDD Brewing Company and Bull Durham Beer Company (more on each below). These four breweries join the popular Koi Pond Brewing and Tarboro Brewing Company West already located on the Mills 150-acre campus.

About Rocky Mount Mills
Historic Rocky Mount Mills includes 300,000 square feet of office/multi-use space (including the historic mill building), 10-20 acres for selected advanced manufacturing and, eventually, 100 new and restored homes/loft apartments as well as existing and future restaurants and other amenities. The campus also features craft breweries, a craft brewery incubator and a brewery lab run by Nash Community College as part of their Brewing, Distillation, and Fermentation degree. Capitol Broadcasting Company (CBC) is leading the reinvention of Rocky Mount Mills -- the same development team that transformed Durham’s American Tobacco Campus into an award-winning national model for historic rehabilitation.
